Accident description Date: 02.05.1953 Time: 11.05 GMT Type: de Havilland DH-106 Comet 1 Operator: BOAC Registration: G-ALYV C/n: 06008 Year built: 1952 Crew: 6 fatalities / 6 on board Passengers: 37 fatalities / 37 on board Total: 43 fatalities / 43 on board Location: Calcutta; nr. (India, Calcutta-Netaji Subhas Chandra Airport) Phase: Nature: Scheduled Passenger Flight: Calcutta IAP - Delhi (Flightnumber ) Remarks: The aircaft took off from Calcutta at 10.59h GMT for a flight to Delhi. Six minutes later the Comet crashed in flames. PROBABLE CAUSE: "Structural failure of the airframe during flight through a thundersquall. In the opinion of the Court, the structural failure was due to overstressing which resulted from either: -(1)Severe gusts encountered in the thundersquall, or -(2) Overcontrolling or loss of control by the pilot when flying through the thunderstorm."
